Quote from: Max Rockatansky on May 31, 2026, 05:38:13 PMMy grandpa was a member of the Knights of Columbus.  I have no idea what they did at their meetings or what his role was.  They did have pretty kick ass Christmas parties though and gave away decent toys to the kids who attended.

See that only makes things more vexing.  The only things my grandpa believed in was watching sports and drinking beer.

I did enjoy one summer when I stayed at my aunt's and uncle's for a couple of weeks and spent a ton of time at the local Elks Lodge. They had a swimming pool and arcade games. Of course they also had a full bbarr but I was still inside Saturn's orbit.

The only thing my colleague talked about as an Elk was buying supplies and setting up for whatever dinner they were having that weekend.  Seemed quite benign rather than well-off men conspiring to do nefarious things. :D

Never mind the Moose or Elk, the Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes is where it's at (or was at back in the stone age).

I thought the Moose and the Elk were just a bunch of old farts who get together in dim bars for day drinking.

There's a Moose Lodge I drive past daily but never went inside. I've assumed it's not open to the public. Further, I have not much idea what they're about.

I responded in the West Virginia thread, but will repeat my response here.

The local Masonic lodges seem to be doing well with recruitment of new members. A number of young/younger than me folks are members of various lodges in my area, and these are all middle-class guys, which puts to rest the myth that the Masons are a bunch of idle rich folks. (Seriously, nobody is getting rich being a highway technician for KYTC).

I never had any interest in joining the Masons, but one of my uncles and my mom's first cousin (who was more like an uncle) were both Masons. The Masonic rites they do at funeral services are interesting, as are the little aprons they wear. Alas, my brother.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

I was expecting this thread to be complaints about the Wossamotta U football team.  In Frostbite Falls the folks live and die by their success or (usually) failure each season.

I don't know what people have against Bullwinkle.

Alanland is closed. The moose out front should've told ya.

Edited for accuracy?

Too many fumbles.  He has the size and strength to be a great running back.  The ball security is constantly an issue though.

Also, there's a requirement to wear a helmet. Rocky complies but Bullwinkle does not don headgear for some mysterious reason. Calling an audible leads to a foul; usually "Too Many Rodents On The Field".
