What are you using to wipe in 2026?

It's 2026 and bidets are increasing in fashionability. But toilet paper continues to be extremely popular, whether basic sewer-friendly one-ply or comfortable two-, three-, or even more-ply. But other options exist, such as a washcloth that you (ideally) immediately wash, or your hand (emphatic ditto).

Personally, I use single ply after several expensive plumbing incidents, but when it's bad I'll pop into the shower for a makeshift bideting.

No options for splintered TP or waffle stomps?

Waffle stomps aren't a method of wiping.

Not if you don't wipe your foot across the drain.

I was using 2025 to wipe 2026, but when I run out, 1988 is always available.

No option for corn cobs?

Some stores around here used to sell a set of three corn cobs as a novelty "hillbilly toilet paper" kit. Two red cobs and a white cob. You were supposed to use a red cob first, then the white cob to see if you needed to use the other red cob.

Personally, I don't get bidets. How are you supposed to dry?

A towel.

Multiple possibilities. As JayhawkCO noted, you can use a towel. Or you could use a small amount of TP (you'll still be using far less than you would to wipe). And some bidets, and bidet seat attachments, come with an air-dry feature. Our bidet seat has that. The most important word of advice I have for anyone using such a feature is to flush before you turn on the air dryer. I recognize some people would experience angst about flushing without putting down the lid first, but your nose will thank you for sparing it the aroma of warm air blowing over your load. I don't generally use that feature because it just plain takes too long (it's not nearly as powerful as the hand air dryers you see in public restrooms, for example). But it would be nice to have if another TP shortage like the one in 2020 ever happens.

The main thing to consider, for anyone who might think about a bidet seat attachment, is whether you need a heated-water feature. In late June that might sound silly, but think about it from the point of view of considering how cold the coldest tap water setting in your residence is on the coldest days of winter. If it's too cold to wash your hands for 20 seconds, it will be too cold for bidet purposes. And there are two types of warm-water bidets. One connects to the hot water line on your sink; the other is electric. I opted for the latter type both because it's easier to install and because it occurred to me that the type that connects to your sink would suffer from the same problem the hot water does when you first turn on the tap. You know how you often have to wait a bit for the water to get hot when you go to shower? Our sinks often have a similar delay. I didn't want that sort of delay on the bidet stream.

I keep telling my wife there is a market opportunity for splintered TP.  Still beats not having TP when you need it.

I selected 2 ply TP, as that's what I buy. But my wife uses our bath towels like flossers. She's a bigger lady and (from what she told me after I asked her about it, I haven't watched her) she has trouble reaching down there to wipe with TP. So she'll use our good bath towels to floss, and in the process has been getting all our good bath towels shit stained. I've asked her to stop using our good towels and use the ratty old ones we use for cleaning up pet messes, etc. instead, but apparently that's too inconvenient. After so many uses as flossers, the stains aren't coming out of the towels, even after bleaching them in the laundry. I've tried to point out to her how fucking gross it is to go to use a towel to dry off after a shower, only to find it shit-stained, but she continues. She could benefit from a bidet.

Ask her to use old panties instead.

You should also consider your plumbing, which I learned the hard way. Installed a bidet seat attachment, it was easy, fine...but I couldn't get the damn thing to stop leaking. Finally gave in and called a plumber—turns out that my house has these weird plastic hoses for the supply lines that were briefly used in the 90s when the house was built. Those hoses apparently need special connectors that don't come with the bidet attachment. They ended up installing a toilet shutoff valve that connects to the supply hose with a special connector and has a standard connector on the other end, so I could install the bidet to the standard connector and now it works just fine.

What is really annoying is we bought two bidet attachments, one for the toilet I use for such things, and one for the toilet my wife uses. I put the bidet on my toilet first so if I screwed something up (which is what happened!) my wife's favorite toilet wouldn't be impacted. And indeed it wasn't...but now she complains that I have a bidet and she doesn't. But we don't have the spare money to spend calling the plumber out to set up the other toilet.
