Dallas; Convention Center Upgrade Versus Jefferson & Houston Street Viaducts

Dallas is rebuilding and dramatically enlarging their Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. Currently two viaducts traverse the Trinity River and enter downtown that will be affected by the convention center expansion. The 1911 Houston Street Viaduct links Houston Street in downtown Dallas and Zang Blvd in Oak Cliff. (Oak Cliff is a neighborhood that was initially a suburb. Today it is part of Dallas.) It also is home to the Dallas Streetcar. A streetcar line that traverses from Union Station to the Bishop Arts District.  The other the Jefferson Viaduct links Jefferson Blvd in Oak Cliff and Market Street in downtown Dallas.

The current proposal from the city of Dallas is to make one of them a pedestrian walkway and the other to be connected to Hotel Street. The people in Oak Cliff want them to remain connected and go under the convention center (which was the initial proposal.) The city counters that this would cost an extra $600 million.
