US Route 101 in the Laytonville area

Laytonville is an unincorporated community located in Mendocino County along US Route 101 (Redwood Highway).  This small community has been US Route 101 since 1926 and part of the Redwood Highway since the 1909 First State Highway Bond Act.  While improvements to the highway in Laytonville have been minimal it has seen substantial modernization in the general area.

This blog will serve as an exploration of the history US Route 101 in the Laytonville area.  The blog cover depicts a southward view on US Route 101 in the community during the 1940s.

I wonder if they will someday build bypasses around Laytonville and Hopland, like they did for Willits. Those two are the only remaining towns that 101 runs directly through as a non-freeway, between SF and Eureka. And Leggett I guess, if that even counts as a town.

Leggett has a bypass though.  The actual "town" is on old US 101/AKA CA 271.

Ah, that explains why it never seems like much of a town when I drive past it on 101. Actually, I was thinking of this spot just north of town. Hyperlink is to the last GSV before they finally moved that extremely old cop car that was parked on the lawn (which I assume was there to scare passers-by into slowing down).

I actually ate there back in December.  They gave really good sandwiches.
