Quote from: kalvado on August 03, 2026, 11:12:45 AMWell, there are different concepts to feed. Most people would say that indoctrinating "thou shalt not kill" is great. But remember the fight over evolution vs creationalism?  There was little agreement there.

Right.  Perhaps the question shouldn't be "Should our schools be indoctrinating our children" but rather "What should our schools be indoctrinating our children with?"  Or that we could collapse "indoctrination" and "education" into one purpose of school.
I am for keeping the bar low. Basic education goals IMHO should cover everyday tasks. Reading, writing, arithmetic - those are non-controversial, pretty much on "thou shalt not kill" level. And statistics is that 15-20% of US adults have  low English literacy (that includes immigrants with non-native English, though).  Throw in some arithmetic, and the number of people who complain about high utility bills which, upon closer look, they just cannot read and understand seems even higher. That is, basically, completing 6-8 grades with good understanding of things...

Kinda weird how some places that indoctrinate "Thou shalt not kill" have the highest murder rates in the nation.

Not being a Mormon myself, I'm not too familiar with the concept in modern society, but it kind of sounds like capital punshiment.

The idea was based on blood-for-blood vengeance.  For a long time, Utah's only form of capital punishment was the firing squad.  It was switched to lethal injection at some point - that might have been phased in.  The firing squad was brought back in 2015.

Many (American) members still support capital punishment as a result - usually citing something in Romans.  Church leadership has walked away from blood atonement and is neutral regarding the death penalty in general.

One branch (smaller congregation) I was in had almost as many missionaries as adult members attending.  We tended to sit in the back and not participate that much.  One week, Sunday School was a presentation from Amnesty International (and that's what the call it in Italy) against the death penalty.  I think petitions were handed around, I don't really remember.

A couple of missionaries brought out Romans, etc.  I reminded everyone that never mind the death penalty, the Church had (and has) a policy of political neutrality.  In other words, we don't decide who we do and don't make presentations for, or advocate for in meetings, we just don't.  (This was in spring 1993.)

Unfortunatley, many individual members do not respect this.  In 2003, I moved in to a new ward (larger congregation) and the majority of the adults wore their views on their sleeve.  I found it a pretty hostile place for a while.

I thought "places" referred to geographical regions where people are indoctrinated with the Ten Commandments.

But I'm still wondering what geographical regions in the USA teach that murder is OK.

Maybe it's more about lack of education that murder is not okay.

Since this is turning into a nice flame thread, let me pull another one of my favorites.

If you have a nasty neighbor/coworker you want to get rid of, what is the primary factor preventing from killing them?
(1) thou shalt not kill
(2) chapter titled "murder" in your state's criminal code

To answer in a slightly different way...  "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth", which is found in a few verses of the Law of Moses, functioned—contrary to popular belief—as a limit on violence.  Such laws required that the punishment fit the crime, in contrast to the more common practice in that day and age, which was honor killing.  So, at least in ancient Israel, which was a theocracy, the general "thou shalt not kill" could not legally be violated in as many cases as it could be in many other neighboring cultures.

Of course, that has little to do with murder in the United States today.

and why is that? I do see people wanting to eliminate an unwanted wildlife all the time... So what is the fundamental difference between a groundhog or chipmunk damaging your driveway and a neighbor flooding your basement?

Putting aside the moral and legal considerations, the neighbor is more likely to be able to kill you back.

Also, my wife consumes a decent amount of true-crime content, and one of the takeaways I have from it is that for as fragile as humans appear to be it is actually pretty damn hard to successfully kill one without a decent amount of effort. So there's that too.

Because one of them is a fellow human being, and the other two are animals.  I figured that fundamental difference was obvious.  If you don't see a moral difference between killing an animal and killing another person, then your moral compass is off.
