School year calendars

Well, our school year calendar is going to need a sudden adjustment. Still no power at some of the schools due to the tornado/wind damage from Tuesday. Today is the 4th missed day to the start of the school year.

If your mayor hasn't called Oklahoma Gas & Electric yet, they should. OG&E is usually willing to send a few trucks out to places out of state that don't normally get tornadoes to put their expertise in repairing Oklahoma's electric grid after tornadoes to use.

NIPSCO has brought in some crews from as far away as Florida. A lot of the problem is the sheer volume of large trees down that have to be cleared before power lines can be accessed and assessed in a densely populated area.

They really need to go back to what it was in the 1970s and 1980s.

Year-round school needs to be relegated to museums as a failed experiment.

Are there places still doing year-round school?

I had it for 6th through 8th grade and loved it from a kid's perspective.

12 hour drive may be a bit too far...

They've sent crews further than that (they're regularly in Florida for hurricane recovery and I think they respond to northeastern ice storms too). And every time they do they make sure the OKC media knows about it, of course, to maximize the corporate goodwill.

The main thing that OG&E brings to the table when they show up is logistics and operational expertise. The manpower is nice to have but they've cleared enough tornado damage over the years to know the best order of operations to get the most customers online the fastest. For as many storms as Oklahoma gets the power grid there is rock solid; when I lived there it was rare to have outages of more than a few hours even after major storms.

Are there places still doing year-round school?

It's common in Indiana for some reason.
