State Highways that have something annoying about them.

Not sure if this has been a topic before but it is fresh in my mind due to the amount of time lately I have spent in Kankakee.

This is specifically for routes that either have a bad directional tag sign or just end for no reason or are as useful to the state as RFK Jr as the HHS Sec.

The example that really annoys me lately is Illinois Routes 113, 129 and 102 in Will, Grundy and Kankakee Counties.

First, Route 113 runs from Route 47 west of Coal City/South of Morris to Route 17 in Kankakee. The route itself is fine. But it is labelled "north-south" when it should be east-west.

Route 102, in the same area is east-west but has a steeper northwest-southeast orientation that 113. Ugh.

Speaking of Route 102, I get why it is signed between Bourbonnais and Wilmington. However, North River Rd (Will County 44) would be a good candidate for the continuation on Route 102 to get to I-55. North River Rd has plenty of traffic to warrant the upgrade ever since IDOT closed the I-55 Southbound interchange to Route 129.

Speaking of Route 129, its become such a shell of its once former self, IDOT might as well have that become a county highway.

Any other examples of annoying routings or signage besides I-238 and I-99?

As a Bourbonnaisan, I will not accept the 102 slander, I do agree with what you are saying about Illinois 129, considering SB I-55 traffic is redirected to 113 to reach 129, by which point the road is pretty much over. Bourbonnais labels 102 as Northwest.

No. The city calls it Main St Northwest. That's not the state DOT putting the wrong directional tag. The state signs 102 as east-west.

But this was more of a slander on Route 113 anyway.

The two-lane segment of CA 152 between Casa de Fruta and Gilroy is a PIA bottleneck.  It certainly is an annoying slog but the high volume of freight vehicles coupled with super commuters makes it very collision prone.

Instead, they both take a sharp 90° turn, missing each other by feet, with 247 heading off to Yucca Valley and 18 shooting off to end in the middle of nowhere between Palmdale and Victorville.

If you want to get technical the post miles on 247 do touch 18 Lucerne Valley.  They then jump suddenly and head the opposite direction.  I would have thought that Caltrans would have resolved this with S post mileage but nope.

Sticking with Illinois...

Take your pick between IL-14 and IL-37, but the town square where they intersect in Benton is really annoying.  No yield signs, and heavy traffic much of the time.  The most annoying time that I remember was when NB I-57 was shut down and all that Interstate traffic had to navigate the Benton town square.

That they can't just straighten out the little S-jog on US-45 in Norris City.

That the route of US-51 and IL-16 in Pana is needlessly complicated, when it should just use 2nd Street east of Poplar instead of 1st.

M-59 in Michigan. It's overdeveloped with endless strip malls, big box stores and restaurants. Because of this the highway is almost always congested. All the Michigan left turns you have to make and the highway alternates between a fast moving freeway and a stop and go surface street. It's a highly annoying route.

Why are these all but one multiples of 7.5 (rounded down)? 17 is the only exception.

TH 9's long E-W segment, which is signed N/S, and even has a significant wrong-way jog in the segment.

TH 169, with its 4-mile spur into the wilderness after a 45-mile duplex with TH 1 between Towe and Ely. Getting rid of the spur is on the table, but the duplex likely would remain as 169 seems to be the preferred number in local parlance.

Some more for MN:

MN 23's one block jog along MN 15 in St. Cloud can be very annoying if there's a lot of traffic, even more so because CSAH 75 is also concurrent with both highways for that one block but in the opposite way that MN 23 is.

MN 40 goes east 25 miles from its concurrency with MN 29 without going through a town or intersecting a major highway before ending at a county highway in Willmar less than a mile from US 12.

It annoys me when state highways terminate at each other in opposite directions. Like, this all could be one route and be so much simpler (of course, I recognize that there are certain situations like this that make sense, such as I-880 in Iowa, but this is in general)! Texas has several instances of this that I've driven:

- FM 2004 and FM 2611 end at each other at an interchange with TX 36. Both numbers are fundamentally the same route.

- TX 60 ends at FM 2031 in Matagorda instead of subsuming FM 2031's route to the coast. Why? I have no idea.

- For a more egregious example, TX 62 and TX 73 in far southeastern Texas are especially weird. Like the other examples, they form one corridor, but rather than ending at each other like the other examples, they have a needless concurrency with one another. This means that going EB/NB on the corridor, the route is numbered TX 73, then TX 62/73, and finally TX 62. This should have been one designation and not three!

Because you mentioned an example of two secondary state routes terminating at each other like that, I should point out that Missouri is chock-full of examples.  It's very common for a four-way intersection to have one lettered route going to the right and a different lettered route going to the left.

Since the older South College Avenue bridge in Newark was removed in 1984, DE 896 has been routed west on Christina Parkway, and then northeast on Elkton Road (and, cough, South Main Street).

DE 896 northbound still goes around the block in downtown Newark.  It goes east on West Delaware Avenue, then north on South College Avenue, and then northwest on New London Avenue and Road.

I would add the Nebraska highways that do this as well.

Arkansas also says hello. I don't know if it's worse or better that in Arkansas the same number is sometimes affixed to 3 or more completely seperate routes. Like, why is AR 159 comprised of 7 unique sections? And that's not even mentioning the AR 980 situation.
