This pic was from Saturday afternoon, Oct 3, 2026, facing west. I expected traffic, but not this.

After traveling eastbound from Lincoln for over an hour, at around 3 mph, we had traveled maybe 4 miles. I don't know if there was a lane closure or traffic collision up ahead. In any case, this pic was on the way back; traffic moved around 8 mph westbound. Scenic - yes - but none of the other roads in this area were this slow.

This is *the* peak weekend for fall foliage in northern New England, especially since there is a holiday on Monday. The Kanc gets the most traffic because it is a designated scenic highway.

Pfft.  It gets the most traffic because social media constantly makes it the trendy place to go see the fall colors in New England and then all the bougie people descend upon it so they can keep up with their bougie friends and be involved in the trend they told existed on social media.

I'll never say I don't want a free Monday off, but in the Northeast, Columbus Day Weekend's the worst out of the bunch of long holiday weekends.  People don't just go to certain places, but the leaf peepers go anywhere and everywhere, bringing crowds everywhere...

I resemble that last remark. My wife and I usually travel the two weeks after Labor Day; we postponed the trip to late September/early October to attempt to get 'maximum fall color'. We knew we'd have company on the roads; it was only NH 112 that was crazy busy. Even US 302 through Crawford Notch was a breeze. The previous weekend had much less traffic likely due to the early nor'easter, though we were in Maine for that.

This weekend is also the weekend to avoid Stowe and Waterbury Center if you value your sanity.

My wife said Stowe was already a nightmare at 8am.
