I think the '49 spec is the best. Too bad it didn't use the modern FHWA Series fonts, though. I think it could make a cool modern classic. After that, the current design is my second favorite, if only because it's not the overly generic black and white.

I prefer 1940 because those are the most valuable!  glass cateyes go a long way.

also, please note the 1934 style with no outer border:



a 1934 style, if it ever showed up, would likely blow 1940 out of the water.
