Quote from: The Ghostbuster on June 19, 2025, 02:09:00 PMThis may have been covered before, but what is this construction project about?: Unknown Construction. Is it a new alignment for AL 13?

Haleyville bypass. It's been in a figurative coma for awhile and the grading has been there for over a decade. The project stalled when federal money dried up and doesn't have much momentum to come back from what I've heard.

Try two decades. I moved from Phil Campbell to east Alabama in 2003 and it doesn't look like anything changed since then.

edit: I'll go ahead and correct myself. Should've looked at historical aerials first.  It looks like the bridges were constructed between 2011 and 2015.

IIRC, the bridge pair I've been on has 2011 cast into the jersey barriers on the sides of it. From what I understand, the bypass has been talked about and wanted for decades.
It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

Some of the new albeit inconsistent AL-161 signage in Orange Beach. They haven't updated any of the old AL-180/161 dual terminus signage minus one lonely sign. I took a few crappy pics. Darkness wasn't my friend.

The end of the Beach Express.

Still AL-180 signs at the former dual terminus. The was a new North AL-161 in place of the old JCT-180 which was the only new sign. Took a pic but it was unusable. Maybe they'll just change this one to a TO-180 eventually. There's till a JCT-161 on old East-180 as well.

New North 161 sign, old Beach Express sign remains.

Nothing updated north of here to US-98. Still just the old Beach Express signs. Foley has said they'll continue to refer it as the Foley Beach Express (I guess for bragging purposes). Wanted to get up to the split up at the AL-59 area for any new updates on the overheads for  AL-308/AL-161 that are on southbound AL-59 but could't make it. Was up at Bucee's last week and saw the plastered (and small) AL-161 signs over the Baldwin Beach Express name on the advance exit signs on I-10 but again that was it. Did see a new AL-307 sign on Roscoe Rd. but couldn't get a pic.

Saw the progress on the traffic circle split for the new south AL-161 connector and they clearly plan to leave the old southbound lanes as they are.  Guess they just leave them as is and just be there as hurricane evacuation lanes if need be. But they'll have to shut the lanes off by Bradford Rd to keep someone from going southbound on the Northbound AL-161 only bridge.
