As I have stated before, I hope the DOT goes for the freeway improvement alternative, and not the freeway removal alternative.

4 alternatives from this study-

1. No-build
2. Replace in-kind- rebuild the bridges on the same/existing alignment
3. Freeway removal- removes the elevated freeway from the Marquette Interchange to the Hoan Bridge
4. Freeway improvement- makes the freeway alignment closer together

Knock it down!

Agreed.  It needs to go. Its madness to have that overbuilt piece of infrastructure cutting through the most valuable real estate in the state.  Honestly, the plan for rebuilding Clybourn in the removal alternative looks to be excessive, but I'll take it.  Bottom line: cities should be for people before cars.

RESURRECT AND BUILD THE PARK!

The Ghostbuster

The Park East Freeway was an underutilized spur that was able to be torn down without major traffic impacts. Interstate 794 east of the Marquette Interchange connects to the Lake Freeway, the Hoan Bridge and the Lake Parkway (and provides connections to the rest of the Milwaukee freeway system, as well as takes trucks off local streets). My preference would be to maintain the freeway and implement the Freeway Improvement Alternative with Right-Hand Ramps at Jackson/Van Buren: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1c4F7xjqhGVZJ6v3v1yqpO5bBEbx6JsnJ/view. I believe that alternative would improve safety and serve the area's traffic needs the best.

Quote from: peterj920 on May 08, 2025, 12:29:50 PMThe new WISDOT map is out. I really like it. Very accurate and the freeways are back on The Beltline, Wis 11, and Wis 145. WisThere's a slight redesign and it looks good.

I like it too.

Interesting additions to the primary highway system (red routes).  I'm not sure that I disagree with any of them.
However, if WISDOT would ever build an interchange on the north side of Mauston with STH 58, that should be a primary route instead of STH 80 into New Lisbon.

The new interstate shields are a step in the right direction.  Blue bottoms (as many states now have on their maps) would complete them.

I think that 5-lane highways with center turn lanes can be depicted as multi lane divided.  It's more informative to me if they are.

Yeah, and there is that inconsistency of what constitutes an expressway.  Stoplights.  55 mph speed limits.  It wouldn't be so noticeable except where they change highway types on the same road, such as US 41 entering Marinette, or STH 23 entering FdL, etc.

Like with Wisconsin Ave (WI 96) and part of Richmond St (WI 47) on Appleton's northwest side?  Those are decidedly normal city streets that are as you describe.

Also agreed. I-794 does have benefits, but they aren't worth breaking up downtown Milwaukee the way it does.

Still trying to figure out if I like the new number font on the new maps. It's certainly different.

Drove on US 10 in Waupaca County today and noticed there's new median signs that say "Keep ↗️ Right." I've never seen them in Wisconsin and why is WISDOT replacing the symbol signs that have been used for decades in the median?

because signs must be in English in the USA.

I does look kinda odd actually, but I wouldn't have noticed unless it was pointed out.

I remember such signs in the 1970s. Still in the MUTCD as one of three options for a keep right sign.

Yes. And here is a story that may have lead to some of the changes.

peterj920

I'd say the golden age of road construction in Wisconsin took place between 1990-2010 when so many major expressway projects were built and completed. Driving around the last few weeks I can see that many of the expressways now need work. Wis 29 and US 10 have rough concrete that needs to be fixed along with US 151 between Beaver Dam and Waupun. The concrete held up for nearly 30 years and on many sections it's time for concrete patching and resurfacing.

Killing the gas tax index in 2008 was a stupid and short-sighted move. While Wisconsin doesn't necessarily need more and wider roads, it needs to be able to keep up with road maintenance.

yep, and we were arguing that back then . . .
