If you ever wanted to see a larger collection of signs from the thirties, look no further. Came across it today at the state library. Enjoy!!!

can you get us a zoom-in of that DETOUR US 90 shield?  also, the 171 shield in the background (bottom right corner of the "SIGN OF PROGRESS") - and finally, that mysterious triangle "65" in the back of the leftmost row?

thanks!

in fact, I would pay a very decent amount for a 2400 dpi scan of the original negative of this image.  I'm assuming it is an 8x10.  please contact me via email/pm if you could arrange for such a thing.

I am working with the library directly.  such a scan is forthcoming.

By the way, PM me that 2400dpi image. Tried to view it in person today, and they said it was being used.

yep, probably Charlene B. had it on her desk.  600dpi is what I'm getting, btw.  it's the best they can do, and for 10 bucks I'll take it.

600dpi is pretty good. Feel free to donate the file to Wikipedia, or at least give me the lady's contact information and I'll buy a copy from her. It's a true gem of a find!

I do not think the file is mine to donate.  email Charlene Bonnette (cbonnette@slol.lib.la.us) and you should be able to quickly figure out what they can let you do with it.

It seems awesome to find this... by the way, could I get a copy of the Louisiana shield that you have on the shield gallery? It would help in running a template, which can be fixed up later if dimensions ever come up.

I would do so, but my terms remain constant.  use '61 instead of '70 spec US and interstate route shields on Wikipedia.

What do you mean by using the certain year shields? I was referring to the Louisiana state route shield, the pelican one, not the cutout US route shields.

I just mean, in general, quit this silly horseshit:

should be '26 spec:

would be nice if it were '57 spec CA cutout:

should be ... really, anything but this.  '61 spec black square would probably work best

should be state-named in Utah:

should be square.  Oregon has never used wide shields.

etc etc.

I can understand putting in '70 spec for places like I-40 in Tennessee (good luck finding anything else), but one should err on the side of historic where it isn't completely senseless to do so.

'26 spec has to be state-specific. Otherwise, the crown will be empty, and it will look weird.

US 101 extends into other states; California doesn't take precedence over other states.

Here's 61-spec

State named Interstates don't come up, and I have no clue why. Trying to work on it.

Check above and tell me if I get your approval! The shields can, and will, be modified.

looks okay on the US-55 to me.  US-6 in Nebraska can be made NEBRASKA US 38.

yes, but cutouts are more fun.

in Washington and Oregon, you are as likely as not to find a narrow shield for 101.  how about '61 spec narrow as a compromise for US-101?

sure; that should be a fairly easy fix since I know you have the templates.... see Oregon I-126, interestingly enough.  (Oregon hasn't used state-named shields since '74)

Quoteshould be square.  Oregon has never used wide shields.

I did my math wrong: it should be OREGON US 126, as US 126 was decommissioned in 1972, and Oregon went to black squares in 1974, adopting the 1970 spec and never having used the 1961.  the only deviation Oregon has from the 1970 spec is to not use the wide shields until about 1990 or so.  "never" referred to US-126 btw.  they definitely use wide shields these days for US-395 and sometimes 101!

Never noticed that before at all, but now I will! I want to create replicas when I win the lottery :P and if I win the lottery, you can bet I'll be out there signing my driveway.

I thought that the first couple lines of text were on a cartoon sign and the things that look like "U"s are outlines of the posts.
