Quote from: I-57/Route 66 Fan on July 13, 2026, 04:46:52 PMIllinois Tollway is proposing a rate hike.

I know Illinois Tollway had their press release today for the Driving Connections Capital Plan but this has been on the docket for awhile. Local news will have their field day again for the residents with short term memory that will complain about everything. Rates are still better than average and I don't have any issues with them raising rates (aside from where the legislature wants the money to go).

A major toll increase (up to 60%) will be coming to the tollway system!

IDOT is looking into a roundabout on Illinois 1 and Kankakee/Will County Line Road. This Fall IDOT will start reconstructing the interchange at I-57/Illinois 17.

The I-57/IL 17 interchange might be the highest cost single project ever built in District 3. It has been in the works for over 15 years and will replace one of the most substandard Interstate interchanges in the state.

That explains the slanted edge of the new truck stop:

Yes, as part of the access permit, IDOT worked with the truck stop in setting the limits of the new development according to the NE ramp footprint for the new SPUI interchange. The frontage road around the west and south perimeter of the truck stop has been blockaded off for months by the city of Kankakee, and will be removed by the interchange project. IDOT is currently in process of acquiring the right of way from the truck stop.

So IDOT is finally getting rid of the death ramp there.

What are they going to do with the rail bridge just south of IL-17, currently the Kankakee, Beaverville & Southern Railroad (KBS)? That bridge was built in 1953 as part of the original Kankakee Bypass by IDOT for the CCC & StL railroad. That has been out of spec for the ages and it has no clearance for anything beyond 2 lanes on each side.

I remember driving through their in 1977 thinking this bridge wasnt built wide enough.

The railroad bridge is going to be rebuilt with a widened I-57 to accommodate the future six-lane freeway buildout.

Re: interchange where I-57 meets Illinois 17. I had an idea for a trumpet spur that used much of the northeast quadrant of the interchange. But a SPUI is a very good and very responsible choice for what to do with this interchange.

Two things:
1. The mayor of Kankakee made an announcement where he said that in around 2030 when the project should be done, he is looking into putting a full service grocery store over there as well, since the people are requesting one since the closest one is about 2.5 miles away. BTW he is a mayor that listens to the people. Some people might also have to be displaced in the project.
2. What is IDOT going to do about the cemetery, apartment complex, and school there?

Just going by the plans here:

A. They will move I-57 a bit to east to make room for the ramps.
B. They built an access road to the east.
C. Nothing.

A ramp retaining wall collapsed on the Kennedy Expressway (I-90) in Chicago due to today's rain: https://abc7chicago.com/post/chicago-weather-today-heavy-rain-saturday-cook-dupage-kendall-will-counties-flash-flood-warning/19611352/

No injuries, but they've closed the ramp (southbound/inbound to Lawrence Ave in Jefferson Park) for now.

It doesn't look too too bad.

All those retaining walls look horrid on that stretch of the Kennedy and have looked bad for at least 15 years. Surprised we haven't had more fall with the recent rainy springs/summers.
The local weatherman, trust me I can be 99.9% right!

Posted this to the DDI topic on the General board.

John Deere Road (IL-5) in Moline is getting a DDI at its interchange with I-74, replacing a cloverleaf in the process. Construction starts next Spring.

I think IDOT might have started the Illinois 50 project 23 years early.
