So, I'm on I-90 eastbound and I pass the Kalispell BGS. It turns out the "200" shield has been changed to the state nameplate "MONTANA 200". This is fresh off the factory, too. Had to have been fall '12 or sometime back in January '13 that this new Kalispell BGS has been erected. I'll have to snapshoot that and show you the new sign.

Also, I see a new mastarm is put in the works at the junction of Highway 10 West, Secondary Route 474, and US 93 North/MT 200 West in front of the Crossroads Travel Center at the Wye on the north end of Missoula. I will also post pics of that. I spotted those changes last Sunday night, but didn't have my camera with me. Figure I give you all a heads up on that.

I cannot offhand recall ever seeing a neutered state route shield in Montana - either stand-alone or on a green sign.  do you have a photo of the neutered 200 which came before the state-named one?  would be an interesting variant.

I don't. Maybe you can ask one of the other folks here if they have photos of the Kalispell BGS from before the installation of the new one. In fact, when I have time within the weekend, I'll make my run out there and confirm that new BGS because, like i said, I did see a new state-name shield but I couldn't exactly confirm it because it was around 8:30 or 9:00 at night.

Wait...pretty much every Montana state highway green sign I've seen is neutered, or am I missing something?

I don't have access to my own photos right now, but

I have not seen a standalone neutered shield to date.

Billy F 1988

I guess MDT replaced it. Before, it was just the wide white box with the black "200" legend in Series C type. As I've said, I couldn't tell initially if from what I briefly had seen on the new BGS if that was still the white box with "200" or the state-name shield. That's why I intend to go back out there to where I've last seen it and closely investigate it.

Well, peeps, it is confirmed. Take a look:

This is the brand new Kalispell BGS with the new state-name MT 200 shield. I am shooting from a minor east-west arterial named Keil Loop facing I-90 westbound on the two mile approach to the US 93/MT 200 multiplex at the Wye.

And here's the new MT 200 BGS up close. No neutering here!

There are a pair of three of these BGSes, three on the eastbound side, three on the westbound that had been replaced by MDT. I could not get the date stamp, but I am hypothetically guessing this BGS was installed back in December '12 or January '13.

Something extra: New JCT US 93 trailblazer

The wide perspective of the new mastarm at US 93/MT 200/SR 474/Old US 10 (Broadway) in front of the Crossroads Travel Center.

Traffic box facing southbound US 93/eastbound MT 200/eastbound Old US 10.

Just behind where this stop sign is, this box is facing SR 474 at the intersection, though right now this one has its back turned against SR 474.

Finally, this signal box faces westbound Old US 10 approaching the US 93/MT 200/I-90 interchanges.

Just an update on the US 93/Old US 10 mastarms. I went by yesterday and had seen that the trailblazer assembly with I-90, US 93 and MT 200 have been moved back from where it orignally was over the years. It is now on the tip of Old US 10/US 93/MT 200. Yellow covers were put over the signal heads and a new "<- US 93/Old US 10 -> sign has been placed on the mastarm facing Old US 10 and Crossroads Travel Center.

On the mastarm facing US 93/MT 200, signal heads are in place there as well with lane assignment plates. Only one so far is up. More than likely, the wiring for the mastarms will be taking place and then testing will take place after that once the wiring between the signal heads and the timers are set. It will not be for while yet. If you are heading this direction on West Broadway Street (or Old US 10) beginning to head northbound US 93/westbound MT 200 or going westbound on SR 474 (Old US 10), look for those mastarms to be in service later in the summer heading into the fall. This is my conservative guess.

I do not have pictures at this time of this progress, but, when I get back out there, I will put more photographs up of the mastarms in its second phase.

Here are some updates from today:

Looking from the Old Hwy 10 perspective (on Secondary Rte 474)

Another duo of mastarms from the LaFlesch Lane perspective

Refurbished trailblazer for I-90/US 93/MT 200; It's moved in closer to the corner of Hwy 10 West/SR 474/US 93/MT 200 than previously.

New street post sign: "<- HWY 93 N/HWY 10 W ->"

Old US 10's sign post (pointing to SR 474)

A wider perspective of the new mastarms. Soon, the baggies will be off and we'll be having two new signals at the north end of Missoula at the Pilot Travel Center and at Crossroads Travel Center. The one at the Pilot Travel Center already works because that one was installed in 2011.

The signals are now operating at Highway 10 West (Interstate BL-90 and SR 474) and US 93/MT 200 at the Wye which is west of Missoula. Those will be your first two signals from now on if you head down from 93 southbound/200 eastbound going to the airport, and will be the last two signals heading outbound from the airport.

While the BGSs for MT 200 are correct, all of the standard shields in the interchange area show "US 200" as of last week:

And on a somewhat related note, the BGSs for BR 90/US 93 south just down the road erroneously show I-90:

Billy F 1988

How the heck did this happen? Since when did we have a US 200? (...or are we?)

Billy F 1988

Um...yeah, but that would mean that Idaho, North Dakota and Minnesota would have to follow suit in converting to US 200. Not likely happening, bud. This definitely is an error on MDT's part.

You asked "how the heck did this happen" and then answered your own question. Why did you even ask it?

Billy F 1988

Could it get any more obvious? Look at the shield Knwit snapped again, dude! Then look at the shield I snapped a few weeks ago. Does that not spell error to you? Plus, re-read these:

My interpretation: The US 200 shield shown in Missoula alongside US 93 in the above photo is an error. It should be Montana 200. There are some who think multi-state 200 should be a US route, and there's others who think it should remain as it is.

I think we're finished with this part of the topic.

the worst error on that shield is the Series D "200" compressed to C width.
