Area 5 sign Lynnwood, WA?

Anyone know what the "Area 5" sign is on I-5 southbound immediately before Exit 182 (I-405 bound for Bellevue)?

It's not very visible in street view, but there seems to be a vertical bar, or possibly a "1" or an "l" to the right of the "5", about 2/3 the height of the 5.  The sign is a bit smaller than your typical interstate roadside sign.

Yeah, maybe.  Not sure why they need a sign instead of using a milepost, but...

Area 5(1)...LOL!

One of my guesses was that the 1 might be vandalism by some X Files fan.
