Interstate 205 is the eastern bypass route around the Portland metropolitan area. With a modern design and additional travel lanes, regional traffic headed north to Seattle or south to Salem generally uses I-205 in lieu of I-5. Southbound Interstate 205 branches southeast from a wye interchange with I-5 in Salmon Creek, Washington, through eastern neighborhoods of Vancover. I-205 enters Oregon at the Columbia River, crossing into the Beaver State on the Glenn L. Jackson Memorial Bridge. Known as the East Portland Freeway in Oregon, it continues south through the eastern neighborhoods of Portland in Multnomah County.

Crossing into Clackamas County ahead of Johnson Creek Boulevard / Exit 16, I-205 services the Portland suburbs of Clackamas, Gladstone, Oregon City, and West Linn. Interstate 205 angles west at the town of Willamette for its remainder to I-5 at Tualatin.
