Historically, PA 10 from Oxford north to Reading was the southern extent of U.S. 122. U.S. 122 was truncated north from Oxford to Morgantown in 1956 and decommissioned entirely from Morgantown to Sunbury in 1963. PA 10 first appeared in 1956 along former U.S. 122 between Oxford and Morgantown. It eventually replaced the remainder of the route north to U.S. 222 in Reading.
Within Morgantown, PA 10 combines with PA 23 along West Main Street for 0.7 miles. The overlap was part of the previous route joining the Pennsylvania Turnpike with Interstate 176 along the Morgantown Expressway. Prior to November 1990, the Morgantown Interchange linked I-76 with PA 10 on the north side of Morgantown. It was replaced by a new trumpet interchange and access road (Morgantown Connector) constructed 1.5 miles to the northeast. The Morgantown Connector was completed in 1996, when it joined Interstate 176 with the PA Turnpike.
