Florida 87

Florida 87 comprises the main north-south route in Santa Rosa County from Navarre to Escambia County, Alabama north of Berrydale. Additionally the state road doubles as a vital hurricane evacuation route as it provides the only route northward from the Emerald Coast between Midway and Fort Walton Beach.

Widening of State Road 87 from the south end of Eglin A.F.B. to Five Forks Road north of Navarre commenced in August 2010. Completion of the four-laning was slated for winter 2012, but amended in January 2013 to summer 2013. Additional widening along another five mile stretch from the south boundary of Eglin AFB to a point two miles south of the Yellow River, commenced on August 17, 2015. The $18.4-million project runs through spring 2017.1
