Part of a multi state route, New Jersey Route 440 has two segment. The east-west segment runs between Edison township and the Outerbridge Crossing onto Staten Island, New York. The north-south stretch enters the Garden State via the Bayonne Bridge, connecting the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Expressway in Richmond County with I-278 (Staten Island Expressway). The portion in New York City includes an overlap with I-278 and a route along the West Shore Expressway.

Constructed on the freeway in Middlesex County kicked off in 1967. The interchange at the Garden State Parkway, I-287 north and County Route 514 was completed in 1970 and the remainder of the freeway by 1972.1 This portion of NJ 440 totals 5.15 miles. The Hudson County section was planned as a freeway but vastly unbuilt. The state route instead winds along surface routes 8.18 miles to U.S. 1 Truck & 9 Truck in Jersey City.

The circular ramp gains traffic from Woodbridge Avenue east ahead of the CR 514 ramp to Fords and Woodbridge. Now return access to Interstate 95 and NJ Turnpike are included for drivers joining from Middlesex County 514. 08/29/05
