U.S. 9 runs nearly the height of the Garden State for 166.80 miles from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to the George Washington Bridge (GWB). The route mostly serves local traffic, paralleling the Garden State Parkway (GSP) from Cape May County north to Toms River. There the route shifts more inland to Lakewood, Freehold and Old Bridge Township.

Once at Sayerville, U.S. 9 and the Garden State Parkway (GSP) parallel one another from South Amboy to Woodbridge Township, including the expansive Raritan River crossing. Just northeast of the exchange between the GSP and New Jersey Turnpike, U.S. 9 converges with U.S. 1. U.S. 1/9 overlap for the remainder of their respective routes in New Jersey, passing through Linden, Elizabeth, Newark and the Pulaski Skyway into Jersey City.

U.S. 1/9 combine with U.S. 46 east from Palisades Park to Fort Lee and Interstate 95 across the Hudson River on the GWB. They separate from the Cross Bronx Expressway with U.S. 9 leading north from Manhattan Island and U.S. 1 joining Webster Avenue through the Bronx.
