Orientated from south to north in the Tar Heel State overall, U.S. 52 travels through central North Carolina. U.S. 52 enters the state north from Cheraw, South Carolina. North through Wadesboro, Albemarle and Salisbury, U.S. 52 constitutes a two to four lane highway. U.S. 52 combines with Interstate 85 northeast for 12.57 miles between Exit 76 south of Spencer and Exit 87 south of Lexington.
U.S. 52 joins Lexington and Winston-Salem alongside Interstate 285. Northwest from Winston-Salem, U.S. 52 is part of Future I-74 to Pilot Mountain and Mount Airy. The northernmost 10.18 miles in North Carolina travels at-grade around Mt. Airy to the Virginia state line south of Cana.
