U.S. 89 enters the Beehive State in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, then passes through scenic Southern Utah. The highway initially heads west through the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, then turns north at Kanab. U.S. 89 then parallels Interstate 15, passing through the Virgin River Valley and Sevier River Valley before reaching I-70 south of Richfield. U.S. 89 connects to some of the most scenic areas in Southern Utah, including Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument and Bryce Canyon National Park.

North of Richfield and Interstate 70, U.S. 89 continues to parallel I-15, eventually converging with the freeway as it continues north. By the time it reaches Spanish Fork, I-15 either closely parallels or runs directly over U.S. 89, with U.S. 89 unmarked along concurrent stretches with Interstate 15. U.S. 89 separates from I-15 at most of the major cities it serves, including Provo, Salt Lake City and Ogden. U.S. 89 eventually parts ways with Interstate 15 at Brigham City, as it heads northeast toward Bear Lake and into southeast Idaho.

Increasing traffic congestion and 23 deaths recorded along U.S. 89 between Farmington and South Weber over a nine year period resulted in a 1993 plan by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to convert the highway into an expressway. Four alternatives were proposed along the 11 mile corridor, where interchanges would replace signalized intersections.1 Improvements were ultimately made, including upgrading the southern segment to a freeway, adding an interchange at SR 60 (Weber Drive) and converting the remainder of the route to expressway standards.

Auxiliary Routes

U.S. 89A in southern Utah provides an alternate route between the area near Page, Arizona and Kanab, Utah. Originally signed as U.S. 89 Alternate, U.S. 89A has also been signed as "SR 11 to U.S. 89A" due to its legislative designation in Utah statutes. As of 2011, U.S. 89A is marked consistently as a unified, signed route between Arizona and Utah.
