An intrastate route, U.S. 96 travels 167 miles from Port Arthur, sharing a joint terminus with U.S. 69 and 287, northward to Tenaha in east Texas. U.S. 96 overlaps with U.S. 69-287, 31 miles northward through Beaumont to a split outside Lumberton where it continues solo to Silsbee, Kirbyville, Jasper, San Augustine and Center.

The current routing of U.S. 96 is the second alignment of U.S. 96 posted. The first route ran between Rosenberg and Brownsville between 1926 and 1934. The south end shifted to Laredo until 1939, when that route was retired and the current Port Arthur to Tenaha alignment was created.
