Alaska State Route 9 lines the southern 36.46 miles of Seward Highway from SR 1 (Sterling Highway) near Wrong Mountain to the city of Seward along the Kenai Peninsula. SR 9 stems north along 3rd Avenue from Railway Avenue just off Resurrection Bay through the Seward street grid. Seward Highway commences north from the intersection with Phoenix Road and Port Avenue.
Paralleling the Alaska Railroad, Seward Highway passes Seward Airport (SWD) northeast ahead of the Resurrection River east of Mount Benson. Continuing north, SR 9 enters Bear Creek ahead of Bear Lake and west of the Kenai Mountains. The state route straddles the east side of Kenai Lake from Primrose and Sheep Mountain to Crown Point northwest of Andy Simons Mountain.
The northern section of SR 9 (Seward Highway) travels between Madson Mountain and Lower Trail Lake into the census designated place of Moose Pass. SR 9 turns west alongside Upper Trail Lake by L.V. Ray Peak and parallels Moose Creek to a three-wye intersection with SR 1. Seward Highway continues another 88.62 miles along State Route 1 to Ingra Street in Anchorage.
Seward Highway was originally constructed in 1950. Beyond repairs made following the 1964 earthquake and floods, the state route remains relatively unchanged. The Seward Highway Milepost 25.5-36 Rehabilitation Project resurfaces the road, expands the shoulder south of Moose Pass, improves drainage and adds traffic calming measures in the community of Moose. Estimated to cost $50 million, the improvement project is anticipated for construction in the fourth quarter of 2025. Design work commenced in the third quarter of 2015 and right of way acquisition got underway om 2021.
