State Route 172 stretches 24.42 miles east across southern Franklin County and northern Marion County in northwestern Alabama. SR 172 branches east from SR 19 just outside the town of Vina to Atwood. Straddling the Tennessee Valley Divide, SR 172 turns south into the town of Hodges.

Continuing into Marion County, SR 172 curves east into the town of Hackleburg. Following Main Street, SR 172 meets U.S. 43/SR 17 just north of Downtown. The state route leaves Hacklesburg along a rural course east to Bear Creek. SR 172 concludes along High Avenue at SR 13 by the Bear Creek town center.
