Delaware State Route 1D forms a suburban loop southeast from SR 23 (Beaver Dam Road) and Belltown to Midway by way of Plantation Road and SR 24 (John J. Williams Highway).1 SR 1D was designated in 1995 to provide an alternate route to circumvent commercial development along SR 1.1

SR 1A and SR 1B are located to the southeast at Rehoboth Beach. There is no SR 1C, though the designation may be reserved for a future route.2 SR 1D formerly overlapped with SR 24 Alternate along Plantation Road. Signs for SR 24 Alt were still posted along Plantation Road as of January 2017.

Delaware State Route 1D North Delaware State Route 24 West
John J. Williams initially carries four overall lanes from SR 1 (Coastal Highway) to Hudson Way and the north entrance to Rehoboth Mall. Future road work will extend the four lane section of SR 24 south to the split with SR 1D (Plantation Road). 01/16/17
SR 1D partitions with SR 24 west for Plantation Road to run along the west side of the Midway and Five Points area. The route formerly overlapped with SR 24 Alternate, though remnant signage is still posted. 01/16/17
Plantation Road provides an alternate route to SR 1 northward to SR 23 south at Belltown. Warrington Road ties into the traffic light with SR 24 from Old Landing Road and the Breezewood subdivision. 01/16/17
Delaware State Route 1D North

Open land spreads to the west across from Aydelotte Estates as Plantation Road approaches Cedar Grove Road. 01/16/17
A staggered intersection with Cedar Grove Road west and Postal Drive east was reconfigured into a conventional intersection with traffic lights during a $3.28 million construction project underway from December 2014 to Summer 2015.3 SR 1D was expanded to include bike lanes and sidewalks during the project. 01/16/17
Reassurance markers for SR 1D/24 Alt appear north of Cedar Grove Road. Plantation Road passes between the Sandy Brae and The Plantations subdivisions along the ensuing stretch. 01/16/17
Robinsonville Road ties into SR 1D (Plantation Road) north from Goslee Mill ahead of this shield assembly. 01/16/17
Construction underway in early 2017 expanded the SR 1D signalized intersection with Salt Marsh Boulevard and Shady Road at the Henlopen Landing community. 01/16/17
SR 1D (Plantation Road) makes a nearly 90 degree turn to end opposite the southbound beginning of SR 23 (Beaver Dam Road). 01/16/17
The curve of Plantation Road rounds Henlopen Landing and parallels U.S. 9/SR 404 as they intersect SR 1 (Coastal Highway) at Five Points. 01/16/17
A short connector links the adjacent U.S. 9/SR 404 with SR 1D south and SR 23 south. 01/16/17
SR 1D ends at a stop sign, while a free flow movement takes drivers from U.S. 9 onto Plantation Road south. SR 23 commences a nearly 15 mile route south to Hollymount and Masseys Landing. 01/16/17
Delaware State Route 1D South Delaware State Route 24 East
SR 24 reassurance marker posted after the merge with SR 1D south. John J. Williams Highway expands with a center turn lane to Bryn Mawr Drive and the Maplewood subdivision. 01/16/17
SR 1D south combines with SR 24 (John Williams Parkway) east for a 0.72 mile overlap to their joint terminus at SR 1 (Coastal Highway). A pair of end shields were posted for the two routes; a replacement made by 2008 combined the assembly. 02/18/02, 01/16/17
Construction in 2016-17 for a new Royal Farms gas station at the southwest corner of SR 24 at Coastal Highway removed both sign assemblies for SR 1. Coastal Highway heads northwest toward Lewes and Five Points and south to Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach. 01/16/17
