State Road 85 constitutes the primary highway connecting Fort Walton Beach and Hurlburt Field at Eglin Air Force Base with interior Florida. Traveling 56.5 miles overall, SR 85 originates just west of Downtown Fort Walton Beach and concludes at the Alabama state line in Walton County. Through the coastal areas including Ocean City, Shalimar, Vaplaraiso and Niceville, SR 85 comprises a four lane, divided highway or five-lane boulevard. Leading north through Eglin AFB, the highway widens with a grassy median and speed limits increase to 65 miles per hour.
Entering Crestview south of Interstate 10, SR 85 transitions into a commercial arterial, serving a number of subdivisions housing commuters to Eglin AFB. Ferdon Boulevard takes SR 85 into Downtown Crestview, where it meets U.S. 90. The four lane section extends 5.3 miles north from there to Auburn. The remainder of the state road northeast to Laurel Hill and east to Svea is a rural two lane highway. Florida State Road 85 transitions into Alabama State Route 55 just west of Lake Jackson at Florala.
