Georgia State Route 17 travels 299.50 miles from SR 21/21 ALT in Port Wentworth outside Savannah to the North Carolina state lime northwest of Hiawassee. Prior to 2020, SR 17 was 5.4 miles shorter, concluding at Interstate 16 south of Bloomingdale. SR 17 was realigned onto Jimmy DeLoach Parkway 8.86 miles east to SR 21 ALT at the Sonny Dixon Interchange at that time. SR 17 south along Bloomingdale Road / Jimmy DeLoach Parkway extension to I-16 was renumbered as SR 17CO.

Paralleling the Ogeechee River, SR 17 heads north from an overlap with U.S. 80/SR 26 at Bloomingdale to Guyton in Effingham County, Oliver in Screven County and Scarboro in Jenkins County. Through the city of Millen, SR 17BY partitions with SR 17 along a 1.52 mile course west along Recreation Drive and Gray Street to U.S. 25/SR 23-121 and north back to SR 17 at Winthrope Avenue.

SR 17 heads west from the Jenkins County seat to Midville in Burke County. The state route turns north ahead of SR 78, entering Jefferson County en route to Louisville. SR 17 combines with U.S. 1/SR 4 and U.S. 221 north 15.31 miles to Wrens.

U.S. 1/SR 4-540 continue northeast to Augusta and U.S. 221 north to Harlem and Appling. SR 17 shifts westward to the McDuffie County seat of Thomson, where a second bypass route separates. SR 17BY loops 7.39 miles around the east side of Thomson, doubling as U.S. 78/SR 10 north from U.S. 278 (Augusta Highway).

SR 17 and U.S. 78/SR 10-17BY converge north of Interstate 20. U.S. 78/SR 10-17 overlap 20.94 miles northwest from there to Washington, where the first business loop for SR 17 is located.

U.S. 78/SR 10 head west from the Wilkes County seat to Athens while SR 17 continues north to Tignall to Elberton. Following a 3.39 mile long overlap with MSR 72, SR 17 turns northwest to Royston along the Franklin and Hart County line. There SR 17BU partitions from SR 17 to Downtown while SR 17 follows bypass to the east.

SR 17 intertwines with the Franklin and Hart County line north to Canon, Bowersville and Lavonia. Crossing Interstate 85, SR 17 expands into a four lane highway, connecting Lavonia with Avalon and Toccoa via SR 17 ALT. SR 17 bypasses the Stephens County seat, joining U.S. 123/SR 365 from Boydsville northwest to U.S. 23/441 in Habersham County.

SR 17AL concludes a 19.42 mile long loop from Toccua west alongside U.S. 441BU/SR 385 in Clarkesville. There SR 17 overlaps with U.S. 441BU and SR 197/385 for 1.05 miles on Washington Street.

Advancing west from Clarkesville, SR 17 leads to Helen in White County, where it combines with SR 75. SR 17/75 overlap 19.83 miles north to U.S. 76/SR 2 at Hiawassee. SR 17 shifts west onto U.S. 76/SR 2 across Chatuge Lake to SR 515 north of Ramey Mountain. SR 17/515 run concurrent 1.12 miles to the state line, becoming NC 69 north to Hayesville.
