The Columbia Business loop for Interstate 70 overlays 2.80 miles of former U.S. 40 between Exits 125 and 128. The business route constitutes a commercial arterial serving a number of traveler services, car dealerships, industrial businesses and a high school. The route appears on the official 1964 Missouri State Highway Map.
Originally known as Clay Street, Business Loop I-70 was renamed to First Capitol Drive east of West Clay Street. The arterial by Lindenwood University was realigned as part of a $54 million expansion project for the campus.1 The 2002 realignment shifted the roadway eastward between Tompkins Street and Kingshighway. A portion of the old alignment west of Kingshighway is used as a parking lot for the university.
