Passing by Pleasant Hills in Lower Paxton township, Interstate 81 advances 1.75 miles southwest to I-83/U.S. 322.
I-83 and I-81 form part of the Capital Beltway encircling Harrisburg. I-83 leads south and west to Downtown and the State Capitol while I-81 runs across northern reaches of the city between Exit 67 and 66.
Interstate 83 begins at Exit 70 and travels southward to Oakleigh in Swatara township before turning west to Paxtang and Harrisburg. U.S. 322 overlaps with I-83 to Lawnton where it turns east to Hummelstown and Hershey.
The three-wye interchange joining I-81 with I-83/U.S. 322 was expanded during 2001-04 construction with a second lane for Exit 70.
A folded diamond interchange (Exit 69) joins I-81/U.S. 322 with N Progress Avenue (SR 3016) in Susquehanna township.
Continuing west, I-81/U.S. 322 converge with U.S. 22 at a systems interchange (Exit 67) in north Harrisburg.
U.S. 22 runs north along Cameron Street between Arsenal Boulevard and Elmerton Avenue (SR 3026) in Harrisburg to a freeway connecting with I-81 and U.S. 322 at Exit 67.
U.S. 22/322 overlap northwest along William B. Lentz Highway, a freeway paralleling the Susquehanna River 12 miles northwest to PA 147 near Duncannon.
I-81 proceeds west through the multi level exchange with U.S. 22/322 to Front Street (SR 3009) at Estherton.
U.S. 22/322 overlap 55 miles northwest from Harrisburg and Lewiston. U.S. 322 continues from there to State College.
I-81 crosses the Susquehanna River over the George N. Wade Bridge between Front Street (Exit 66) and U.S. 11/15 (Exit 65). U.S. 11/15 run along the west side of the Susquehanna River between Lemoyne and Duncannon.
A c/d roadway separates from I-81 south for U.S. 11/15 north to the borough of Marysville and south to the communities of Enola and West Fairview. Overall U.S. 11/15 overlap south to Camp Hill and north to Shamokin Dam.
