Route 4 branches north from I-95 at Exit 72 A. Parelling I-95 and I-80 to the north, the controlled access arterial and expressway connects with Route 17 in Paramus.

The George Washington Upper Level opened to traffic on October 25, 1931. The Lower Level opened on August 29, 1962. The span is 4,760 feet in length. The towers are 604 feet in height above the Hudson River (Port Authority of NY & NJ, n.d.).
