Interstate 140 constitutes an 11.19 mile freeway spur extending southeast from I-40/75 and SR 162 in western Knoxville to U.S. 129 and SR 162 (Pellissippi Parkway) in Alcoa. SR 162 overlays I-140 north to SR 62 near Oak Ridge and south to SR 33 between Eagleton Village and Rockford. SR 162 is 19.62 miles long.

Within Knox County, Interstate 140 serves suburban areas east of Concord and north of Fort Loudon Lake on the Tennessee River. The segment in Blount County provides part of a route to McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS). An extension of Pellissippi Parkway (SR 162) will lengthen the limited access highway south from SR 33 to U.S. 321 (Lamar Alexander Highway) east of Maryville.

The Pellissippi Parkway Extension previously did not proceed due to an insufficient Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) done on the corridor in 1977. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) completed a new Draft EIS for the extension on April 16, 2010. A Record of Decision (ROD) for the State Route 162 Pellissippi Parkway Extension was issued by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on August 31, 2017. Design work commenced in September 2018 and continues into 2021.
