Interstate 172 spurs north from I-72 near Hannibal, Missouri and Hull, Illinois to Quincy along the Missouri River. The rural freeway originates 0.80 miles south of the Adams County line at a trumpet interchange with Interstate 72 within Pike County.

I-172 extends 18.89 miles north within Adams County to U.S. 24 beyond the city of Quincy. Illinois State Route 110, the Chicago Kansas City Expressway (CKC), overlaps with the entire length of I-172. The CKC continues north from the Interstate along IL 336, a controlled access, at-grade expressway to Mendon, Loraine, U.S. 136 at Carthage.

Interstate 172 Guides

The Central Illinois Expressway (CIE) extending north from the Pike County line to Quincy and U.S. 24 was originally designated as Illinois State Route 336. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) initially proposed designating it, and the CIE, U.S. 36 from near Hull to Springfield, all as Interstate 172. Plans changed by 1995, with I-72 outlined along U.S. 36 (Central Illinois Expressway) and the spur to Quincy as Interstate 172. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) approved the numbering plan on April 22, 1995.

A 7.5 mile long section of the Central Illinois Expressway opened to traffic on August 17, 1989 at an opening ceremony attended by Governor James Thompson. Designated IL 336, the section costing $42 million to build extended north from IL 57 near Fall Creek to IL 96 southeast of Quincy.1 The CIE was completed at Hull on November 15, 1991. This included the link with IL 336, the Springfield-to-Quincy stretch.2
