Interstate 180 constitutes a 14 mile spur south from I-80 in Bureau County to IL 26 and IL 71 at Hennepin in Putnam County. A lightly traveled route, 2017 traffic counts recorded by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) varied from 2,650 vehicles per day (vpd) south of U.S. 6 to 4,300 vpd south of the exchange with IL 26.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) gave conditional approved for the creation of a new Interstate route from Lincoln north to I-180 near Princeton on June 25, 1974. The route was designated as Interstate 53 under the provisions under Title 23 USC, Section 139(B). The numbering was subject to agreement between the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Secretary of Transportation.1
