Interstate 195 was signed on various maps through the 1980s, but the highway was originally designated as MD 166 northwest of U.S. 1 and as MD 46 southeast of MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway). There was no connection between MD 166 and MD 46 until a bridge was built over the Patapsco River to link the two in June 1990.
