Interstate 280 connects San Jose with San Francisco, providing an alternate to the crowded Bayshore Freeway corridor. U.S. 101 (Bayshore Freeway) serves the suburbs lining the west side of San Francisco Bay while Interstate 280 follows the San Andreas fault through a largely unpopulated area. The freeway is part of the Sinclair Freeway from U.S. 101 northwest to Interstate 880, and is designated the Father Junipero Serra Freeway from there north to the San Francisco city / county limits. The north end of I-280 is located south of Downtown San Francisco, a third of a mile from AT&T Park (home of the MLB San Francisco Giants) along King Street. The freeway was intended to link directly with I-80 along the James Lick Skyway and the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge.
