Interstate 474 provides a southerly bypass of Peoria. Looping southeast for 14.88 miles, the freeway begins in western Peoria at Illinois 6 and ends at East Peoria near Morton and Interstate 155. I-474 first opened between U.S. 24 and Illinois 29, including the Shade-Lohman Bridge, on August 30, 1978. The rest of the bypass was completed on December 20, 1979, including a portion of the Illinois 6 freeway north to U.S. 150.1
