Interstate 474 provides a southerly bypass of Peoria. Looping southeast for 14.88 miles, the freeway begins in western Peoria at IL 6 and ends at East Peoria near Morton and Interstate 155. I-474 first opened between U.S. 24 and IL 29, including the Shade-Lohman Bridge, on August 30, 1978. The rest of the bypass and a portion of the freeway extending north along IL 6 to U.S. 150 was completed on December 20, 1979.1
