Interstate 510 travels through New Orleans East and links Interstate 10 near Little Woods with the Intracoastal Waterway bridge of Louisiana 47 south to St. Bernard Parish and Chalmette. The freeway replaced Paris Road (old Louisiana 47) as the main north-south route in the area when it was completed in 1992.
The alignment of Interstate 510 was originally proposed as the eastern component of the planned south New Orleans beltway (Interstate 410).
