Interstate 595 lines 19.97 miles of the U.S. 50 freeway (John Hanson Highway) between the Capital Beltway (Interstates 95 & 495) and the interchange with Maryland 70 (Rowe Boulevard) at Annapolis. This stretch of U.S. 50 was designated as an Interstate in 1989.
Original plans called for U.S. 50 to become a part of Interstate 68. That numbering shifted to the National Freeway west from Hancock to Morgantown, West Virginia, leaving Interstate 595 as the next choice. Signs for the route were to be posted, but because of familiarity with U.S. 50, it was decided to leave I-595 as a hidden designation.
