Nevada 488 (Lehman Caves Road) constitutes a 4.79 mile long spur west from Nevada 487 (Baker Road) at Baker to Great Basin National Park. The state route concludes 0.707 miles ahead of the Lehman Caves Visitor Center at a cattleguard. The uphill climb along Nevada 488 takes motorists into the Snake Range. Anchored by Mount Wheeler, the 13,064 feet peak is the second highest peak within the Silver State. Great Basin National Park was established in 1986. It encompasses the former Lehman Caves National Monument as well as the surrounding alpine environment of Mount Wheeler.
