Multi State Route 24 follow a north-south freeway from Portsmouth, Rhode Island near Mount Hope Bay to Interstate 93, U.S. 1, Route 128 near Canton, Massachusetts. Known as the Fall River Expressway, Route 24 provides one of two free bridges from the north onto Rhode (Aquidneck Island) along with the Mt. Hope Bridge (Route 114) from Bristol. This distinction will change in 2013 when the new Sakonnet River Bridge opens fully to traffic to replace the 1956 steel truss bridge between Portsmouth and Tiverton. Electronic toll collection is proposed to commence in June 2013 on the new span at a possible rate of $4 for non-residents.
