U.S. 9 Business was established by 1976 along Savannah Road northeast from Five Points (U.S. 9 & SR 1) to the Lewes business district and Cape Henlopen Drive. Cape Henlopen Drive returns U.S. 9 Business east to U.S. 9 just ahead of the Cape May Lewes Ferry landing.

Historically U.S. 9 Business replaced the easternmost extent of SR 18, which also overlapped with SR 14 along Savannah Road between Belltown and Wescoats Corner.
