U.S. 12 traverses 339.4 miles through the state of Wisconsin, entering the western part of the state concurrent with Interstate 94 near Hudson along the St. Croix River. The U.S. highway leaves its counterpart only to parallel it for most of the journey through the Badger state, passing through the cities of Eau Claire, Baraboo and Madison on its way to northern Illinois. U.S. 12 consists of freeway and expressway portions, including the 17.5 mile freeway from Elkhorn to Genoa City at the Illinois state line.
