U.S. 22 travels 60.53 miles in the Garden State, mostly along a route parallel to Interstate 78. The US highway enters New Jersey at Phillipsburg from Easton, Pennsylvania. Following a 5.07 mile route, U.S. 22 turns southeast to join I-78 between Exits 3 and 18, east of Clinton. Route 173 follows the former route along this overlap.

East from Lebanon, U.S. 22 branches away from I-78 to Somerville and Interstate 287 at Bound Brook. The route becomes more urban with commercial frontage eastward through Green Brook township to North Plainfield, Watchung and Mountainside.

Once in Springfield Township, U.S. 22 expands to a six lane commercial arterial with a built-up median to Union Township. This leads the US route east to the Garden State Parkway and Hillside Township, where U.S. 22 follows a more traditional arterial to Weequahic Park in Newark.

The final stretch of U.S. 22 takes an expressway east to a complicated interchange with Interstate 78, U.S. 1/9 and Route 21 by Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). U.S. 22 formally ends at the ramp for U.S. 1/9 north to the Pulaski Skyway.

U.S. 22 East
The east end of U.S. 22 before the interchange with Route 21 was expanded to include the missing movements. The left exit ramp to Route 21 north and the U.S. 1/9 Express lanes north to the Pulaski Skyway were removed. Instead a flyover links with Route 21 north into Newark while ramps join the U.S. 1/9 Local lanes south to EWR Airport and Jersey City. 03/15/00
