The first seven miles of U.S. 31 are orientated in an east-west fashion, as the highway parallels Interstate 10 to the north. While in Spanish Fort, U.S. 31 follows a four lane parkway initially, as seen in these northbound photographs at the southern end of SR 225. SR 225 connects U.S. 31 with the fast growing areas of north of Bay Minette Creek, Historic Blakeley State Park, and Stockton 24 miles to the north. The state route intersects Interstate 65 at Exit 31. 06/06/06
The western branch of Baldwin County 72 connects U.S. 31 (Spanish Fort Boulevard) with SR 225 (Blakely Drive) via Blakeley Way. This scene looks east at U.S. 31 after Blakeley Way. Expansion of U.S. 31 between County Road 72 east to SR 181 is planned. 06/07/06

County Road 72 angles northwest from U.S. 31 in Spanish Fort to a boat ramp at Bay Minette Creek north of the city limits. 06/06/06
Four miles to the east of SR 225, is the northern terminus of SR 181. SR 181 originally was a short route that linked U.S. 31 with Interstate 10 and U.S. 90 at Malbis. A mileage swap with Baldwin County 112 extended the route southward to U.S. 98 over Baldwin County 27 in 2004. 06/06/06
SR 181 follows Malbis Plantation Parkway south to Belforest. Construction of the Eastern Shore Centre in the early 2000s transitioned the four-lane roadway into a heavily commercialized arterial between U.S. 31 and U.S. 90. Four-laning of the route south of U.S. 90 accommodates explosive suburban growth to the east of Daphne and Fairhope while increasing capacity for SR 181 as an alternative to U.S. 98. Baldwin County 27 (Jimmy Faulkner Drive) was constructed in 2004 between U.S. 31 at SR 181 to serve the new Spanish Fort High School and connect area roads with Bromley Road west of Stapleton. 06/06/06
U.S. 31 curves northeast from Spanish Fort to meet Bromley Road and SR 59 (Gulf Shores Parkway) at Stapleton. 06/06/06
SR 59 provides the main route to the resort areas of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach for points north via Interstate 65. The state highway also joins Foley, Loxley and the county seat of Bay Minette. 06/06/06
Historically, hidden SR 3, the counterpart of U.S. 31 in southern Alabama, was the signed route leading south to Gulf Shores. SR 59 took over sometime after 1950, when SR 3 replaced SR 12 as the unsigned route for U.S. 31. 06/06/06

U.S. 31 & SR 59 (Gulf Shores Parkway) enter the Bay Minette city limits near Baldwin County 40 (Old Daphne Road). The parkway becomes an arterial with industrial type businesses, strip malls and car dealerships to the route split. Pictured here is the approach to Baldwin County 138 (West Hurricane Road) west. County Road 138 was a SR 138 until sometime after 1982. 06/06/06

Like many southern Alabama county seats and towns, Bay Minette includes a town square at its city center. U.S. 31 follows a one-way set of streets (Courthouse Square) between D'Olive Street and East 2nd Street. SR 287 ends on the north side of the square via Hand Avenue. 06/05/06
U.S. 31 northbound departs Courthouse Square at East Second Street. Traffic continuing north within the square enters U.S. 31 southbound 90 degrees from the northbound beginning of SR 287 (Hand Avenue). Hand Avenue carries the state highway two miles north to SR 59 (Gulf Shores Highway). From there both state routes continue to separate diamond interchanges with Interstate 65. 06/05/06

1.4 miles east of downtown Bay Minette is the community of Eastwood and the western terminus of Baldwin 112 (Old Pensacola Road). Baldwin 112 constitutes a direct connection between central Baldwin County and Pensacola, Florida in lieu of Interstate 10. The drive along Old Pensacola Road provides a quick 30-mile jaunt through pine logging country to Escambia County and the Perdido River. 03/20/09, 06/05/06
Baldwin 112 was originally SR 112. The rural route was downgraded to Baldwin County 112 in exchange for an extended SR 181 along Baldwin 27 (Belforest Road) between U.S. 90 at Malbis and U.S. 98 near Weeks Bay. ALDOT crews swapped out signs by early 2006 even though SR 181 was not extended southward yet. 06/14/04
