U.S. 31 North
U.S. 31, although having paralleled Interstate 65 north since Bay Minette, meets the freeway for the first time in Alabama at Hope Hull in Montgomery County. 06/02/11
U.S. 31 was expanded to five overall lanes through Hope Hull due to increased traffic from the 2005-opened Hyundai plant nearby. Passing over I-65, drivers approach the southbound on-ramp to Greenville and Mobile. 06/02/11
Interstate 65 leaves the Montgomery area and U.S. 31 at Hope Hull for Lowndes County and a 159 mile drive to the Port City. 06/02/11
U.S. 31 (Mobile Highway) continues north from Hope Hull and Hyundai Boulevard to a diamond interchange with U.S. 80 (Selma Highway) in south Montgomery. U.S. 80 west & ALabama 21 south share ten miles west by Dannelly Field to a split for Selma and Hayneville respectively. 08/22/03
U.S. 31 Alabama Route 21 North
U.S. 80 follows a 1992-constructed freeway from U.S. 31 east to merge with Interstate 65 north as SR 21 departs the freeway and joins U.S. 31 north across Catoma Creek. Originally U.S. 80 also joined Mobile Highway for its movement into Montgomery. 12/28/09

A pair of 1986-built bridges carry U.S. 31 & SR 21 northbound traffic across Catoma Creek. 12/28/09
U.S. 31 and SR 21 part ways at South Boulevard. SR 21 turns east to return to U.S. 80 along South Boulevard while U.S. 31 north joins West Boulevard. 12/28/09
South Boulevard (SR 21) east from U.S. 31 north quickly meets Interstate 65 at a diamond interchange. There U.S. 80 from I-65 north and U.S. 82 from I-65 south join the commercial arterial east to Southmont and Lynndale through south Montgomery. U.S. 231 and 331 tie into South Boulevard as well. 12/28/09
Mobile Highway continues north from U.S. 31 and SR 21 to Fairview Avenue. West Boulevard carries U.S. 31 to the west, bypassing Montgomery and Maxwell Air Force Base to Birmingham Highway and Prattville. This alignment doubled as U.S. 82 until a relocation of the route onto I-65 in 2000. 12/28/09

East from U.S. 31, SR 21 (South Boulevard) north enters a commercial strip centered on the interchange with Interstate 65. This six lane stretch used to also carry U.S. 80 and 82, which the following mileage sign reflects with distances to Tuskegee, Union Springs and Eufaula. 10/06/12, 12/28/09

U.S. 80 west combines with Interstate 65 south for nearly a mile to Selma Highway west. I-65 leaves the Montgomery area otherwise for a 163-mile drive to Mobile. 10/06/12
