U.S. 83 represents the longest numbered route in Texas, traveling 904 miles from the Mexican border crossing at McAllen northwest to the Oklahoma Panhandle beyond Perryton. The Texas Highway Designation Files only attributes 783.51 miles to the route, which generally serves rural areas from the Rio Grande Valley north to Laredo, and from Laredo to Abilene.
