Originating in Abbeville, U.S. 167 travels 217.50 miles north in Louisiana to Missouri at Junction City. U.S. 167 connects Abbeville with Lafayette. A change made in 2022 realigned U.S. 167 out of Downtown Lafayette over a combination of LA 3025 and LA 3184, 3.60 miles northwest to I-10 at Exit 100. U.S. 167 overlaps with I-10 east to Exit 103 B at the south end of Interstate 49.

I-49/U.S. 167 overlap north from I-10/LA 182 in Lafayette to Exit 23 at LA 744 outside Opelousas. U.S. 167 was directly upgraded to limited access standards along this stretch. I-49 was approved along U.S. 167 between Lafayette and Opelousas by the Federal Highway Administation (FHWA) on October 22, 1981.

Turning northwest, U.S. 167 combines with LA 10 to Ville Platte, where the route branches north to Turkey Creek. I-49/U.S. 167 meet again at Exit 61 in Rapides Parish.

U.S. 167 parallels I-49 north from Meeker alongside U.S. 71 to Lecompte and the south side of Alexandria. U.S. 167 joins I-49 for a second overlap north to Pineville Expressway while U.S. 71 shifts onto MacArthur Drive, an arterial bypass west around Alexandria.

Pineville Expressway is a limited access highway taking U.S. 167/LA 28 northeast from Alexandria into the city of Pineville. U.S. 167 curves northwest beyond the separation with LA 28 to rejoin U.S. 71 between Tioga and Timber Trails.

Continuing into rural Grant Parish, U.S. 167 runs through the villages of Creola and Dry Prong. Within Winn Parish, U.S. 167 connects the city of Winnfield with the village of Dodson. U.S. 84 overlaps with U.S. 167 for 1.76 miles through the parish seat.

U.S. 167 advances north into Jackson Parish ahead of Jonesboro, Hodge and Quitman. Entering Lincoln Parish, U.S. 167 follows Vienna Street to a couplet with Trenton Street through Downtown Ruston. U.S. 63 begins at the split diamond interchange joining U.S. 167 with Interstate 20.

Extended into Louisiana in 1999, U.S. 63 overlaps with the remainder of U.S. 167 north from Ruston 35.35 miles to Junction City. The two link the towns of Vienna, Dubach and Bernice with the village of Lillie.

U.S. 167 was extended 113 miles south from Pineville to Abbeville with approval by the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) on June 17, 1948. The request was made by the Louisiana Department of Highways following numerous requests from civic organizations in both Louisiana and Arkansas. It replaced portions of LA 26, LA 218, LA 23, LA 22, LA 5 and LA 43.

U.S. 167 was realigned onto Pineville Expressway bypassing Alexandria and Pineville over the newly completed freeway in 1981. Eliminating a portion of the overlap with U.S. 71, the 13.5 mile long relocation was approved by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) on October 4, 1981. U.S. 167 was realigned again at Alexandria onto an overlap with I-49 north to Pineville Expressway as approved by AASHTO on November 12, 1994. I-49 was slated for completion in December 1995. The former route along U.S. 71 (Lee Street) and the couplet of Mason/Overton Streets was established as U.S. 167 Business.

The final section of U.S. 167 realigned onto Interstate 49 was approved by AASHTO on May 24, 1984. The 5.3 mile long relocation bypassed Opelousas between Exit 19 / U.S. 190 and Exit 23 / LA 744.
