U.S. 522 travels briefly into Maryland between Morgan County, West Virginia and Fulton County, Pennsylvania through the Hancock area in Washington County. U.S. 522 crosses the Potomac River two miles south from I-70/U.S. 40 near the east end of Interstate 68. U.S. 522 overlaps with I-70 northward to Warfordsburg, Pennsylvania.

Interstate 70 East U.S. 522 South

U.S. 522 southbound departs from Interstate 70 at the a tri-level stack interchange (Exit 1B) adjacent to the Exit 1A interchange with I-68/U.S. 40. The US highway proceeds southward to an interchange with MD 144 (Main Street) at the town of Hancock. 06/24/12
MD 144 represents the original alignment of U.S. 40 between Millstone and Harvey. An original button copy sign remained in use one quarter mile north of the Main Street off-ramp until its replacement in 2011. 08/07/04, 06/08/12

U.S. 522 passes over MD 144 (Main Street / former U.S. 40) through the town of Hancock. A right turn ahead links the US highway with High Street east, one block north of MD 144. There is no direct access between the two numbered routes otherwise. 06/24/12
U.S. 522 northbound prepares to merge onto I-70/U.S. 40 west in northwest Hancock. The US highway joins Interstate 70 west for four miles between Exit 1B in Washington County to Exit 168 at Warfordsburg, Pennsylvania. U.S. 522 turns northeasterly from Warfordsburg to McConnellsburg from I-70 west in Pennsylvania. Interstate 68 begins immediately north of the U.S. 522 merge onto I-70 from the left. The freeway combines with U.S. 40 west to cross Sideling Hill in ten miles. 06/24/12
Interstate 70 U.S. 40 West U.S. 522 North
The westbound beginning of Interstate 68 leaves Interstate 70 with U.S. 40 for Sideling Hill, Cumberland, and Morgantown, West Virginia. Interstate 68 replaced U.S. 48 east of its split with U.S. 40 in Garrett County in the mid 1980s. The freeway ends at Interstate 79 presently. Plans exist to extend Interstate 68 northwest to Interstate 70 in Wheeling, West Virginia. 06/24/12
