Virginia Route 172 spurs 4.85 miles north Hampton to the independent city of Poquoson. The route loops east along Commander Shepard Boulevard from SR 134 (Magruder Boulevard) to Langley Air Force base and NASA Langley Research Center to Wythe Creek Road. The remainder of SR 172 lines Wythe Creek Road north to the intersection of Yorktown Road and Poquoson Avenue.

Commander Shepard Boulevard extends west from a folded diamond interchange joining SR 172 with SR 134 (Macgruder Boulevard) to Big Bethel Road at Big Bethel. Prior to construction of the arterial west, SR 172 ended at a trumpet interchange with Macgruder Boulevard.
